Good morning, My grandmother is 87 years old and has been suffering from osteoporosis for many years. Should she supplement calcium? None of the doctors recommended it, even small doses, e.g. 300-400 mg / day. Alternatively, they mentioned vitamin D3, but only recently takes 3000 IU / day spring-summer and 4000 IU / day autumn-winter – is this a reasonable dosage? Sincerely, Matthew H.

Calcium and vitamin D3 are ingredients used in the prevention of osteoporosis. The recommended daily dose of calcium is about 1000 mg, and vitamin D3 up to 4,000 IU per day. If osteoporosis is advanced, a visit to a specialist would be advisable. You may need a bone densitometric test (x-ray to measure bone mineral density) and laboratory blood tests, m.in vitamin D3 and calcium levels. In the treatment of osteoporosis, in addition to supplementation with calcium and vitamin D3, the doctor prescribes drugs that inhibit bone resorption and support their formation, m.in. alendronic acid (eg Ostolek, Ostenil, Alendrogen) - used once a week (70 mg) and ibandronic acid (eg Bonviva, Ossica) - used once a month. The use of vitamin D3 and calcium alone may not be sufficient, although it has an adjunct effect.
