I was bitten by my cat, a cat that sits at home and in the yard (I live at home)unvaccinated cat. On Sunday I got a tetanus vaccine and an antibiotic, while the cat is on a 15-day observation.the vet says that it is not a big bite, she slightly stuck a tusk and the risk of rabies is small. My question is, what if, despite 15 days of observation, the cat will be ok and my symptoms may appear in 2 months? Is it real?

The incubation period of rabies varies from 1 to 3 months, however, it can reach up to a year. Immediately after the bite, typical symptoms of rabies do not occur, which is why it is so important to individually assess the situation and the likelihood of infection as well as proper post-exposure prophylaxis. Its basic element is proper cleaning of the wound, consisting in thoroughly washing the wound with soap and water, and then disinfecting it with a spirit-based agent. Then, if the cat develops signs of rabies within a 15-day observation, then the person at risk of infection is given a vaccine and an antiglobulin against rabies that provide immediate action of the neutralising antibodies.
