The active substances of Yaz birth control pills are drospirenone and ethinylestradiol. Drospirenone has anti-adrogenic and minor antimineralocorticosteroid effects. It does not exhibit estrogenic, glucocorticoid and antiglucocorticosteroid properties. Drospirenone has properties similar to natural progesterone. Ethinyl estradiol has stronger effects than natural estradiol. Preparations based on drospirenone additionally reduce water retention in the body, reduce inflammation associated with acne or have a beneficial effect on lipid profiles and insulin metabolism. The active substances in Zoely's birth control pills are nomegestrol and estradiol. Nomegestrol has antiestrogenic properties, moderate antiandrogen properties. Nomegestrol has no estrogenic, androgenic, mineralocorticoid and glucocorticoid activity. Nomegestrol reduces the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome and does not cause masculinization. Estradiol has properties identical to natural estradiol. Both preparations are effective contraceptives acting through several mechanisms, such as inhibition of ovulation. The choice of a specific contraceptive should be preceded by a consultation with a gynecologist.
