Damage to the organ of vision is one of the common side effects that occur during the use of Rybelsus, but it is a complication resulting directly from diabetic retinopathy, not from the mechanism of action of the drug itself. An increased risk of complications resulting from diabetic retinopathy was observed in patients taking insulin and semaglutide (Ribelsus) concomitantly. Diabetic retinopathy is damage to blood vessels within the retina of the eye. The main reason for the appearance of this complication is the lack of metabolic compensation of diabetes = persistent high blood glucose. Proper glycemic control reduces the likelihood of eye damage.
