Methodology

Deficits Automaton

1 A long list of all shortages

Every day, the automaton classifies all drugs on a long list that:

  • are on prescription,
  • used to be available in at least 10% of pharmacies;
  • their availability has decreased by at least 50% from the maximum in the last 6 months or from the moment when they were classified as critical shortages.

2 List of critical shortages

Pharmacists classify as critical shortages those products that:

  • do not have substitutes or substitutes are not sufficiently available, also for economic reasons,
  • are not seasonal products whose availability changes naturally throughout the year.

History

reports before March 2024

In August 2019, we published our first medicines shortage report: the inspiration for this was provided by the drug crisis at the time, which in particular meant shortages of medicines used by large groups of patients with diabetes and thyroid problems.

From then until February 2024, the report was published every two months as the only independent publication of its kind.

In March 2024 we decided to automate access to data, in particular to provide access to a full list of not only critical shortages, but also information about expected deliveries.
